Your hair grows as long as you live. As it grows, whatever chemicals that are circulating in your body gets deposited in the shaft at the time the chemicals are in your body. As it grows there will be deposit in your hair in bands. A piece of hair can be taken and tested, and based on the length of gaps between the deposits, and the time it was removed, it can be determined when the chemical was in your body. When you cut your hair that part is removed and gone forever. If you have an old piece of hair hanging around it can be tested for past drug use, but the hair on your head will no longer contain it. So, if you have taken any hydrocodone in the past and have not cut your hair, the drug can be detected where it was deposited in your hair. Because hair grows at a regular rate, when you used it can be determined based on where it is in the shaft.
