I had a miscarriage at 16 weeks after having one child, and had two children afterwards. We didn't know why either.
You should make sure it wasn't because of an incompetent cervix, when the cervix can't hold the weight of the growing baby and opens prematurely. Did your water break and you delivered the baby quickly soon afterwards? That would be a warning sign. If the baby died while still inside you, it could have been a number of other things, or if the baby was born after bleeding for some time, decreased fetal movement and/or a lot of pain it could have been an abrupted placenta, genetic disorder or infection.
I know it's hard to try again after such an experience, it took me a year to try again and I had another miscarriage afterwards, that one at 8 weeks that quit growing. However after that I carried two full term babies with no trouble at all.

I am sorry this happened to you. I haven't had it happen to me personally, but my best friend had a miscarriage many years ago. She then successfully had two kids later. She had a boy, who is now 19, about 2 years later, and had a girl, who is now 16. My birth mother also had several miscarriages between my younger brother and my baby sister (they are 3 years apart). My ex's first wife had several miscarriages before having her two kids, who are now 27 and 29. So, yes, it's possible to have a baby after having a miscarriage. If I were you, I would have both of you go to the doctor and be checked out, have blood work done (especially with you), etc, to see if there is something in the blood of either of you that could cause this to happen. Then, if there is nothing wrong, go ahead and try again. Sometimes miscarriages happen for no apparent reason.
Good luck!

It is more common than you realize.
Me, my sis, my cousin, my friend had about 3, and we all had successful pregnancies after.
The best was my Great Grandma. She had a girl, then 12 miscariages, and finally 17 years after her first child, gave birth to my Grandpa.
