Don't start with a motherboard if you want performance.
Start with the processor. It wil probably be the most expensive single part of the computer, although high end video cards will give it a run for the money. If money is no object, go to Intel's web site or ADM's and pick the biggest, baddest fastest processor you can find.
Then go to ASUS's web site and see what boards fit that processor. Pick the one with the features you desire.
The motherboard specifies what sort of memory you can use. Stock up, more is better.
The motherboard may have on-board video, sound, network, etc, which means you might not have to add those things unless you want better quality video, sound, etc.
If you are gaming, the sky is the limit on video cards, you can spend $1,000US on a top-of-the line video card. Check against your motherboard, it has to fit. Topend video cards are PCI Express these days, not AGP.
Sound cards are still pretty much PCI based.
Figure out how much disk space you want and how fast. Compare with motherboard specs again, there are some fast drives running SATA these days. I like Western Digital drives, but there are many fine hard drive manufacturers.
You will need at least a CDROM, but if you want to play DVD's, or burn CD's, or burn DVD';s, those are all upgrades. Need a TV tuner? Wireless interface? Floppy? Count PCI slots again, boards only have so much room.
Now go find a case to stuff it all in, and a power supply to run it all. ASUS has some nice cases.
Computer geeks were just running a series on how to build a computer, e-mail me and I'll send you a link.

I am somewhat of a computer geek, and that is what I call a motherboard. Very fast and easy to tweak it seems, I would install a fan or two (I don't trust a fanless system), but other than that, have at it.
P.S. do a search on that motherboard to find compatable parts.

You can get a lot of info from: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/cat.php?id=6
Generally, Asus motherboard is a good choice.
If you are looking for the ULTRA fast PC, I suggest you wait for a while, cause somewhere end of year 2006, a 4 core processor is coming out from AMD and Intel. :)

Not a bad one. Not sure what they're charging for this, but the features look pretty good.
