I was convicted for Felony Theft when I was young, age 19, in Kansas now I am 33 living in Utah and want to get a rifle for hunting.
From what I can find, A) I can never have a firearm unless i get record expunged, or B) I can have a firearm if conviction was over 7yrs ago, and wasnt a violent crime Defined as "aggravated murder, murder, manslaughter, rape, mayhem, kidnapping, robbery, burglary, housebreaking, extortion, or blackmail accompanied by threats of violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to commit any offense punishable by imprisonment for more than one year, arson punishable by more than one year, or attempt to commit any of these offenses." (Utah Code 76-10-501(2))
I only had probation for 1 yr, fines, which was all taken care of after the 1 yr supervised probation.
So do I need to do anything special to get a hunting rifle and if so what?

I can't address the specifics of Utah law. In Kansas, it is a violation of law for a felon to possess a firearm unless their civil rights are restored. Utah may have different rules.

There is also something you are forgetting: It is a violation of federal law for a felon to possess a firearm. Your best bet would be to apply for a pardon in Kansas. Pardons are granted most often if you have lived a spotless life since then, have truly reformed, and are a productive member of society.

Contact a Kansas attorney (get a referral from the Kansas Bar Association) and they can advise you more specifically on the requirements and process for applying for a pardon.

you need to contact your local probation officer. I know you are not on probation, but he would be able to tell you.
