I believe that the kids who join a gang is directly a result of the break down of the family.
Of course, single mom can do a wonderful job raising her children, but other mom's don't have the support they need to raise young boys.
If they have no father in there life, it is a natural progression for these boys to seek out another 'family' and they receive that affirmation from gang members. Its very sad and it is tied to family break down and lack of education.

gang culture is what most young youths are exposed to in today's society. Its in the rap music they listen to, music videos, movies and fashion. It makes youngsters feel like a part of a group. They feel accepted and wanted by others; many of these youngsters don't recieve this type acceptance at home and turn to those who do show them some form of attention, unfortunately this is usually a gang!

Children learn what they are exposed to. The familiarity of that brings their content. If big brother/sister and/or mom/dad is/are in a gang, or if they see this behavior, they're going to emulate it. Maybe it's just somthing going on in their neighborhood. They're picking it up and they think they're being "cool."
It truly does take a villiage to raise a child. If you're noticing a problem with your local children/youth, you need to consider getting involved. Mentor them. (through a reputable organization, of course) get involved in your community. Church is a good place for kids. And their parents. And pray for the youngins who think they need to be part of a gang!

It is only appealing to those that are easily influenced by negative roll models. I wouldn't say it is appealing to the average person with common sense, just those who have nothing going for themselves, insecure, illiterate, and come from broken homes and parents in undeveloped, broken relationships.
If they are that young like you've stated, five to nine years of age, that is just sad and I would blame the parent's in that case. Children that age should be in a protective home setting with loving parents guiding them in the right direction. But unfortunately, it is not like that for those youngsters.

Gangs are full of pussiess and wussies. It's full of people who cant stand up for themselves and have to have some uneducated people stand up for them. To them violence is the answer. Yes. It has approached young people sadly. That's because the older people use them to transfer crack. Who ever is in a gang is messed up. Huhjeebus. There are so many problems.
