Got a laptop and want to conserve USB ports. Bought myself a PS/2 to serial converter to use my PS/2 mouse, and it doesn't seem to work too well. I was thinking maybe serial port doesn't supply enough power for an optical mouse to work... i don't know.

Oh yeah... my laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port although some do.

Also wondering what is a good solution since I also game alot on my laptop since, hence an optical mouse is minimal for me, and I need to conserve USB ports too. which also brings me to the fact that I don't like the idea of bringing a powered USB hub whereever I go.

I've never seen a serial optical mouse. As far as I can think of, the serial port doesnt supply any kind of power. Therefore you have to go usb. If your concerned about using up all your usb ports, buy a PCMCIA USB 2.0 4 PORT CARDBUS HUB ADAPTER. That will add an extra 4 usb ports to your laptop. The only drawback is that if your laptop has only one PCMCIA slot instead of 2, and you rely on that for wireless internet, then you have to sacrafice one or the other. Click the link below to see what a PCMCIA Card is if you dont already know.

I'm surprised to hear that you were able to fit the optical mouse to a serial port; in the first place; because it's an USB device!?

Anyway, serial ports are far slower than the USB ports, so it's no great surprise that your mouse is not functioning optimally!?

In fact, it's a surprise that it's at all working.

All the best.

Cheers.

I got my wife a really small Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse. The USB receiver snaps into the bottom of the mouse when you're done and turns the mouse off to save the batteries. It was only like $15.

It must be USB mouse. Surprised to hear your laptop not having PS2 port. By a USB hub (i have a 4 port hub which doesnt need any ext power and very cheap)

Your mouse configuration is too low, and I betcha it is trying to run a mouse with the settings made for a touch pad!

And, no, won't run on the serial port, worth piss!

Try it on USB! Lots faster! There is a ps2 to USB adapter!

No, it won't work. Either buy a USB optical mouse, or use a non-optical mouse, through the adapter you've bought.

You can get an unpowered, mini USB hub...look in laptop accessories.
