Why do I feel so overwhelmed, most especially when it comes to dishes? I really would like to be able to grow out of it, but I can't seem to be able to do so. I have had this problem all my life and it has caused me a couple of marriages. To simply say "get off your butt and do the work" doesn't do it. I tell myself all the time to no avail. It is always "later", "tomorrow" and it never comes. I wish I could afford a maid, but unfortunately I don't earn enough to afford one.

How do I change? Please no flaming! I'm really desperate here.

Carcrazegal? What part of flaming didn't you understand. Did you read the part where I said that lecturing won't resolve the problem? I spent my life around people who were yelling, lecturing, criticizing, AND IT DIDN'T WORK!!

I need some REAL solutions.

I feel the same you do, and the others have given you good pointers, but none of them have brought up the obvious: It could be very likely that you suffer from Depression, and one of the symtoms is precisely your inability to function and to do normal tasks.

Go get yourself checked by your doctor or a mental health clinic, and then get into some counseling and medication. This might help you be more motivated to do your housework and other things.

It is wanting to live in a clean environment. You have to want to change first of all. It's pretty easy to keep a clean house, when you take a shower, make sure you have a laundry hamper to put your dirty clothes in. While you are in the bathroom, after brushing your teeth, wash out the sink basin immediately. Lean over and give the toilet a quick squirt of Lysol Toilet Cleaner. While you are in the shower, periodically wash the shower areas with some antibacterial cleaner.

When your feet hit the floor in the morning, turn right around and make your bed. There is nothing like a nice freshly made bed to crawl back in at the end of a hard day.

You could cut back on dishes by buying styrofoam or paper plates. Also plastic utensils and cups. This way you can just throw them away when you are done. To keep from washing pots, order out, or buy microwavable foods.

Clean the floors twice a week. What I do is have a room that I clean thoroughly everyday. It stays very clean that way.

Cleaning sucks and if you let if go, it can be overwhelming. If you have kids, delegate chores to each one of them. Find cleaners that make cleaning easier too. I use Clorox wipes and have one tub under each sink (bathrooms, kitchen). Use the disposable cleaners for the toilets (the clorox one hooks on to the side of your toilet, just attach a new one, use it, flush it and hang the handle back up). If you have a dishwasher, rinse the plates immediately and put in the washer, as you cook, do the same and at the end of the evening start the wash. Find shortcuts that allow you to become more efficient in cleaning. Turn on the radio to your favorite station and jam while your cleaning. This really makes cleaning fun for my kids and I. HTH

You feel overwhelmed because if your whole house is a mess, it is overwhelming. There is a website called Flylady.net. It can help you get started with baby steps. You start with a little thing like having a clean and shiny kitchen sink at all times, and you work up from there. It takes time to change a habit, and really, that's what you're dealing with.

Remind yourself that the amount of diseases that will result from accumulating dirty dishes will definitely get you sick and cause you much more than the cost of a maid. Try pre-soaking the dishes in soap water with the bottle cap full of bleach to disinfect the dishes and to make removal of grease easier. Also put n some jazz or other inspirational music while you work and you will see how easy it is.

I own and operate a cleaning service. And after doing houses all day who want's to do your own , but I hate coming home to a messy house so sometimes I have to go out and purchase something even an item or nic nac from the dollar store. It gives me the incentive to clean the house even organize or rearrange things just to disply that item .Sounds crazy but works for me. Why not have a service come in and do a thorough spring cleaning. Then commit yourself to keeping it up from there. I'm located in So. Fl luv to help Send me an E-mail

There are some things around the house that just have to be done. Take care of the chores first, then kick back and enjoy the rest. Most jobs don't really take that long if you stay up on them and don't let them pile up. Good Luck !!

Because it's boring as hell, & you'd rather do something fun instead, but think how rewarding it will be when you're done.
Keep up on housework weekly so it doesn't get out of hand. I put on some tunes & do housework

Do the dishes every day, so they don't pile up, and won't take as long to do.
Pick up clutter as you walk past it, and JUST put it away where it belongs.
Select one room to clean, per day of the week
