I'm going to college this month (I'll be a freshman), and I'd like to know what I'm going to need to bring with me / buy. Besides the usual "Bed, Bath, & Beyond"-type checklist, what else might I need?

Can you answer how far away from home you will be and if you intend on going home? Is your college in a rural or urban setting? Will you have a car or other transportation? Have you visited to see what your room will look like/how big it is? I don't know much about your situation and my answer might differ if I knew more. But I hope this helps.

For Yourself:
1. Make sure you have a phone/calling card/mobile phone so you can keep in touch with loved ones. The first year can be rough and lots of people get homesick.
2. Flip flops - you don't want to get athlete's foot or something worse while showering.
3. Bath caddie - while this isn't a necessity, it will help you to organise your things and it will be easier and less time-consuming to prepare for your trek to the shower room.
4. Ear plugs - unless you are adept at drowning out noises, this will help you keep your sanity in certain situations. Of course, if you are someone who relies on alarm clocks, it might not be in your best interest to sleep with them. But bring them just in case.
5. Alarm clock - unless you can wake up on your own.
6. Headphones - unless you don't have a roommate or your roommate shares your musical taste. Even so, you should probably use them.
7. Cleaning devices and materials - broom and dustbin, vacuum (if you have carpet), your favourite cleansers, laundry detergent, laundry basket, garbage can (although they sometimes provide them)
8. Dry erase board or corkboard - you can hang this on your outside door. You can leave messages for your roommate and other people can leave messages for you.
9. Putty, nails, or thumbtacks to put your posters up.
10. All the normal stuff like bedding (you can get something extra to place between the mattress and bed cover because the mattress can be uncomfortable), bathroom necessities, food if you plan on having a refrigerator, etc.
11. Computer and/or printer if possible - the public facilities may not always be available and you may want some privacy with your documents.
12. A plant - more oxygen and looks nice
13. Heater/fan - unless your room has its own system. Otherwise, even if you have central a/c, it might not be the right temperature for you.
14. Fun stuff that you can share with other people in your dorm. Get to school as early as you can so you can take your time moving in and getting to know people. They will appreciate this too.

For You and Your Roommate:
Figure out what your roommate is bringing and coordinate. Your school probably provided contact information?

Things you can negotiate to bring: refrigerator (find out the restrictions your school has), microwave, beanie chairs (they're comfy and that way your friends have places to sit other than your bed), cinder blocks (to make your bed higher for extra storage space), carpet, curtains, etc.

Whatever you forget to bring, you can probably purchase there. It may be better to not bring too much since space is limited. But it depends on how far you're travelling if that's a possibility for you and also if you have the money...

Good luck and have lots of fun. :)

Do not bring too much stuff because you do not want to clutter your room. Hopefully you will have someone help you move in and you guys can go to target once you are in your room and you can evaluate what you really need. Don't forget the shower caddy, flip flops, and robe for bathing.
Microwave
mini fridge
phone
alarm clock
radio/CD player
computer
TV
usually dorm beds use extra long twin sheets (you can call and ask)
photos frames of family.. friends you have and you will meet

An open mind. Girl you are going to have so much fun. Get ready to meet lots of people some you will love some you will want to avoid. Be careful, have fun and be safe!

1. Posters because you always want to have a decorative room!
2. Earplugs. It may get noisy at night if ppl are in the hall.
3. A computer. Of course!
4. Extra sheets for you bed. ( Just in case)
5. A Roomie. Just in case if you get lonely and want to talk.
6. A lot of clothes. Can't be to sure!
7. A fridge. You will get hungry!
and
8. Extra storage. You will have to (Or want to!) get a lot of stuff!
Well have a great time and I hope my list helps a little!

I second the earplugs! Also, you can coordinate with your roommate who will bring a fridge and microwave. Check with what your dorm allows, but a water boiler thing is a good idea (not a hot plate). Extra long twin sheets are usually a must.

A manservent comes in handy. But if you can't get one, the three biggest things I found handy in college was food prep (a heating element, a mini fridge and a slow cooker) Storage (For me it was all milk crates, you can make couches, chairs, and large storage units out of them) and and entertainment. (Not just TV or Xbox, something simple like a 'borrowed' laser show can get people over for a drink or three)

Find out what your college allows you/doesn't allow you to bring to school. See if you can speak with your roomate ahead of time so you don't double up on anything
Usually you need a phone
a TV
silverware
A microwave
Plates
books
a small fridge
DVDs/CDs

A small fridge, tv, computer, a little lockbox for money and jewelry believe me get one at wal mart for 11 dollars and use it. They are small and have a key lock on them. You'll need a small vacuum, cleaning supplies, a microwave (if room). Towels, flip flops for showers.

A bank account for the Kiosk. Your parents put money in at one end and you take it out the other.
