"here we are at the watering hole deep in rhino country. A mother rhino warily brings her calf to drink, but she has to be careful in case there are crocodiles - wait - i see a herd of elephants - no, its just three. Isnt he magnificent, the big bull leading the way for the female and her youngster. The rhino looks up and tenses, for surely these elephants are far out of their normal range and she has to protect this water for herself. If the elephants get in, they will turn it to mud.
" But the big bull has no intention of wasting time with a smaller animal, and in his thirst, plunges towards the lifegiving pool. The rhino, head down in the attack position aims for his rump, but the bull takes a swipe at her with that massive head. The tusks alone could throw a landrover on its side, and although she weighs somewhat more than a landrover, she recovers and finds her mark with that vicious horn.
"The horn itself is a hard keratin structure, that in days past, when there was little poaching, would have been a much longer and more lethal weapon. Alas, today with rhino numbers dwindling, they themselves seem to select males with shorter horns. Sadly, this too has been observed in elephants.
"The bull is wounded and retreats to the bush to recover while the rhino runs a lap round the pond in victory!"

National Geographic channel has been showing a documentary in which elephants have been killing rhinos in a wildlife preserve, and it happened many times, with no elephant fatalities...so I'm assuming that an elephant would win. Apparently they topple the rhino and either crush it with their weight or (in a couple of cases) thrust a tusk through the rhino while it's on the ground. Doesn't help that the rhino's are basically gentle animals, and have horrible eyesight.

rhino.
and here's the ringside commentary:
the elephant makes a few swipes with his trunk, and stamps a bit, missing the rhino or hitting him only glancingly. the rhino dodges these attacks fairly successfully for a few minutes. finally the elephant lands a blow on the side on the rhino's head. now enraged, the rhino dodges under the elephant's trunk and feet, and uses his horn to make a swipe at the elephant's underbelly. the attack hits home, and the elephant is defeated with a fairly severe stomach wound (which will, i predict, be fatal)
there wo go, what a fight. be sure to tune in next week for the ultimate showdown: Jesus vs. Superman.
