Alabama public schools are probably worse than any school in the North. Had a close relative move to our state from Alabama. In the primary grades, Alabama was a 1/2 year behind so we had to play catch up or the child would have to repeat a grade.

I don't technically think I can answer this question, because my sons previous public school was in Northern VA.....and now he is in Southern NC....
Both are below the mason dixon line...the VA school only by 30 min!
But I have to answer...because, the schools are so different....
I'll keep it short....which limits my explaining....but...oh well,
The No. Va. schools were awful, they focused on counseling, psychology, the teachers had no rule over the kids..they called the parents for everything....which I hated....
The NC schools are great. The teachers and school take a lead in discipline which allows them to teach...the focus was taken off behavior and put on learning. The kids act up, it is nipped in the bud.....
I don't know how to make my point really....I guess since I've lived it I understand, but I can't really put it into words....
I guess I'm so happy to see my child learning and excelling....when just a year and a half ago, the Northern Virginia school system suggested drugging him for getting mad at a kid that punched him, or picking a dropped pencil up off the floor.....

Up here (in Michigan) teachers/administrators assert their authority by taking away legitimate rights, while they ignore the real issues. For example, students were sent home for having their hair dyed in bright colors, like orange and green. Also spikes couldn't be worn on dog collars, so you had to put silver balls in instead. But nothing was done about opportunity for more dangerous things. For example, a girl I knew tried to commit suicide by swallowing a whole bottle of asprin in the girls' bathroom, during class time. And I used to leave school almost every other day without telling anyone. No one really even notices when people are missing...even though anything could have happened to them.

I am from up north (Pennsylvania) and the school I go to is really nice. We have a bunch of activities and sports and the teachers are really nice and funny (at least most of them). I like it there... I don't really know about the south... my cousins live in Georgia but they arn't in school yet... sorry... anyway the schools up north (at least the ones in PA) are really cool.

Dude, thats not why you go to school. You should be asking which ones are the better schools, better teachers because it will make you a smarter, more capable person. IF you are really wanting not to be f##ed with..then go to a big urban school. They have ghetto thugs to worry about and wont give a crap what you do as long as its not absurd. But seriously...why wouldnt you want to go to a school to prepare you for the rest of your life by teaching you how to critically think and by challenging yourself?
