The same thing that stops me from running around town naked, even though my part of the world is now experiencing a record-breaking heat wave.

The fear of arrest? No.

As we mature, we gradually internalize the norms of our society.

In Western culture, we have been taught that suicide is wrong, and so we come to believe it. [Likewise, we're taught to wear a certain minimum amount of clothing in public. And we come to believe that's right. Consequently, "streaking" is rare, and when it's done, it elicits a lot of attention.]

In feudal Japan, the Samurai class was taught that suicide was the honorable thing to do if one discredited his or her family.

However, not everyone internalizes social norms to the same degree. Consequently, although it is relatively rare, suicide does occur in our society.

P.S. If you are actually contemplating jumping off a bridge or otherwise committing suicide, I hope that you'll consider phoning your local suicide hotline first. Sometimes others can see an alternative that you are overlooking.

Mostly I'd be too scared to jump off a bridge. But, seriously, you sound so depressed. You should make an appointment with your doctor and get a complete physical. Sometimes depression can only be helped with medication (it's a chemical imbalance issue). Otherwise, I really enjoy watching and listening to a rainstorm in the summer, drinking a cup of hot tea, riding in my car with the windows rolled down and the radio blasting, taking a walk during the first snow fall of the season, learning how to use some piece of cool new technology, helping people... it's just the simple things in life that keep me in this game. Take care of yourself, ok?

What if I change my mind half way down?

As bad as things may seem sometimes, there are always those moments when they aren't bad. What if, having made the decision to jump, every wonderful moment of my life comes flooding back to me..and I realize I'll never have another one..as I'm half way to the bottom?

It seems more sensible to me to learn to deal with the bad times, because there's always another sunrise...and if I really need a serious fix...I find a beach facing west near sunset, and I sit in the sand...and I focus on that one spot just where the sun will kiss the horizon...and for that one moment I can feel all the good, and the peace around me...and I know...it's all worthwhile.

Serious answer: I am afraid of pain, scared of heights, and I don't want to die today. I know that no matter how much today sucks, no matter how lost and alone I feel in the world, the sun WILL come up tomorrow morning and I am not going to miss the chance to enjoy a moment of happiness or to find some resolution or peace from today's tragedies. I still have things to do on this earth, and devastated or not, I will accomplish the things I have set out to accomplish. So, I guess the answer is HOPE for a better day, the PROMISE of future happiness, the DETERMINATION to make my situation better, and GOALS for the future.

Jumping off a bridge would hurt for a few seconds and who would want that. Besides how are we going to know what is going to happen tomorrow if we aren't here to see it. Life and truth is always more interesting than death and fantasy. Get some fun things to do.

Call it my will to survive. I belive that everybody is placed in this planet for a purpouse. Most of us have not the slightiest clue of what this is but we all know that when we have served our purpouse we will no longer be needed here. I have not founf out why I am here yet......Or maybe I have and I just feel like I can do more good in this crazy world even if it is the smallest amount of good. Throw a pebble into still water and watch the rippes flow through the entire body of water before they end.

We each have a role to play and we directly effect those around us wether we know it or not. Therefore taking your own life is detremental to the advancement of society. I know I have a purpose and my life is not my own I answer to a higher power who orders my steps and leads on the right path.

My son. If I jumped . . . he would be traumatized for life. So I grin and bear it most of the time. It keep playing, even though I don't want to anymore. Just for him.

The many blessings that I see when looking..and not looking,
free will,
faith in myself,
rearing and educating my children,
the power of my convictions,
being an amazing part of this world,
bearing witness and taking part in all that is offered to us..lessons, love, faith, education,
I could go on..
