A rar file is a lot like a zip file. It holds many files inside. WinRAR is the best program. You can get a free trial at http://www.download.com or at http://www.winraronline.com. Also WInRAR can open both zip and rar files. The trial version only gives you the popup when you first startout but it is very small.

rar file is a type of compressed file, like .zip. You will need a program that can decompress it. Check out download.com and/or snapfiles.com. one free one I have used is called 7-zip and it handles 7 different compressed file types.
