If someone got an undergraduate degree from an online university, would they stand a chance of getting into a decent graduate school afterwards?

It depends on the discipline. For example, if you have years of business experience, and got your bachelor's degree in business from a reputable online school (there are very few of these), you might have a decent chance at getting into a reputable MBA program.

However, in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, there is not much chance for admissions into a good graduate program.

Here's why:

People that administer graduate programs need specific information in order to grant admissions to applicants, such as the ranking of the undergraduate program, and the professors with whom each applicant studied. Since online schools do not participate in disciplinary rankings, and since online schools generally do not employ noted scholars as professors, graduate admissions committees have very little reliable information to go on when trying to evaluate a student with an online degree.

Please note, however, that online classes taken under the auspices of a brick-and-mortar school, like a state university, would not count against an applicant to a graduate program.

You could that depends on what on-line school you went to. Before you started did you find out if the on-line school is accredited b/c if its not then basically the degree means nothing. Also check with the Grad schools of your choice they will be able to tell you the process and what they look for. After all, the worst thing they could say is no.

College accreditation is the most important element in your online degree. You must ensure that the university that you choose is regionally accredited not nationally accredited. I know it sounds backwards, but regionally accredited schools have stricter guidelines and graduate schools know that.

When in doubt ask a graduate school counselor.

Also, check out www.esc.edu. Great online school.

it would depend on which grad school you want to go to and which online school you got your degree from? they would have less chance in getting in to there choice of grad school but there have to be some school who take online school people because other wise why would any one go to an online undergrad school... but you might want to call the grad school you want to go to and find out...
