They believe that a woman's primary role should be serving her husband and family. If she enjoys sex, she is more likely to stray into adultery. If sex is just a "duty" from which she derives no pleasure, there's no reward in leaving her husband/family.
Please don't confuse the female circumcision in Africa and the Middle East with male circumcision! In the case of boys, only the foreskin (analagous to the clitoral hood in the female) is removed. That has no impact on sexual function or pleasure later in life. In contrast, female circumcision typically removes the clitoris entirely, often with part or all of the labia as well! This leaves almost no erotic tissue to stimulate, and leads to many health problems.
Although frequently outlawed, the practice continues, often carried out by an older woman in the village who uses a rusty/unsanitized blade or a shard of pottery (Ouch!!) It is barbaric, but the politically correct crowd tells us that we need to be "tolerant" of other cultures and their practices...

Well according to the East African tradition, it is suppose to supress a female from wanting to have sex until she is ready to become married. I believe the age is 2 years old and the non-doctor does not use sterilized equipment, nor does she use anything to put them asleep, they are awake during the entire procedure. The place is normally unsanitary, and there is no sympathy for these females, pretty strange and dangerous custom.

This topic was on oprah some time ago, that's where I got the info to give to you.

Female mutilation, involving cutting off of the clit is done in African countries so that the female won't feel any sexual stimulation or desire. Therefore she will remain faithful to her husband, and be reluctant to have sex b4 marriage. I'm jus thankful i wasn't born in east Africa, because this is a tradition which has been carried out for centuries.

long tradition. cultural ideas. for example the mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and as far back as anyone can remember have had this done. it's very risky to consider skipping it. it makes women go "wild" i have heard an african man say. I believe it is a way of controlling sex. it is believed the woman will not be able to get married if she is not. that she would not be "good" or "proper" or desirable. try reading alice walker's "possessing the secret of joy"
why was footbinding performed? why is male circumcision perfomed? why do people pierce babies' ears?

It is a tradition that is mostly done in order to dissuade females from having sex. The logic is that if they mutilate a female she won't learn how to enjoy any type of sexual contact and she'll stay a virgin until marriage because of this.

to truly understand if it's possible to understand this horrific barbarism you should read Alice Walker's novel "Possessing the Secret of Joy" it is a very disturbing book which you will have to force yourself to read but it gives some insight into the culture and why they think this is necessary. Believe it or not they consider it a rite of passage into womanhood, this despite the fact the many of these young girls die of infection.

Its a tradition, but it has become more than that and is now a part of the financial arangements and marriage. In the US boys are done for health. There is no health related reason for a girl to have this done.

In case you haven't noticed, the people in East Africa are not the smartest people in the world. Most of them still chase animals with sticks and think the white man is trying to kill them off by giving them condoms to fight sexually transmitted diseases. So what can you expect from them.

They do this in MANY nations...and I have NO IDEA why ANY woman would submit to it or support it being done to her daughter. SICK.
