I live on Social Security and am raising my 2 kids by myself. I am renting a 3 bedroom apt. The sidewalk outside my door kept getting pounded with mud when it rains because of the incline in the yard. The upstairs neighbor came down one day, started digging a 12" deep trench where the hill met the sidewalk. He then filled it up with stones that belong to my landlord. It looks great, and it will probably work. However, I never asked him to do it, nor did we ever discuss what he was going to do. My landlord had no clue this was going to happen. So now, my neighbor knows (because he is on disability also) that I get paid next week. And he says " I know when you get your check, you will do the right thing, I did alot of work". Hellloooo!!! While he was doing the work, I told him many times, thank you, and did you ask the landlord if you can do this?? He just grumbled. I have given him a very nice dresser and mirror since then as a token of my appreciation. Is that enough??

Be honest if he asks. That work was the responsibility of the landlord and while your thankful the problem was fixed, you couldn't afford it because of your family responsibilities, nor did you feel obligated to fix the problem yourself since you signed the lease as-is.
You rent a property at a specific rate with all faults when you sign a lease. If something breaks after signing a lease, then you have the right to ask the landlord to fix it. This sounds like a long-term issue that you basically agreed to from day 1 as did your neighbor, and he made this improvement for his own benefit, not for yours. Let him know what the dresser and mirror was worth and make sure he knows you feel that is more than sufficient for work you never felt obligated to have done to begin with.

Yes thats more than enough. If he brings it up again just tell him you had some unexpected bills come up b4 he did the work so if expected to get paid for it, he shoud've checked with you first. Then maybe suggest he try to get paid by the landlord since he put the work into his property.
He may have helped you, but he's trying to use you, if you let him this time he'll only be back for more.

No, you didn't ask him to do it, and the landlord didn't ask him to do it, he did it on his own. you don't need to pay him. If he bugs you for the money or anything else. Call the police, tell them you are being harassed by someone and they will deal with it. You don't have to do anything. or pay anyone. A thank you is enough appreciation he gets. That's all i give anyone. If I say I'm going to pay them, i will pay them, but if not, then no I'm not paying anyone. He says do the right thing. You will do the right thing, tell the landlord and tell the police if he bugs you. Don't give him any money. You have 2 kids and yourself to support, no one else. Keep the money for you and your kids.

The landlord has the legal responsibility to repair and maintain the property, not the tenants. You owe the other tenant nothing.

Hell no. No one gets dressed and gets tools and gets to work not kniowing if they will be paid for it. he should have figured out ofhe was to be paid or not BEFORE he started to work "so hard". He is taking advantage of you, because obviously you have some inner voice asking if this is right or wrong. He is wrong for asking for money he never was offered.

I don't think that you need to pay him. Maybe the landlord can do something for him. It should be his job. If he expected something, he should have said something first.

That is more than enough. He didn't consult you and made the decision all by himself. The work out was probably good for him anyway.
