I eat out by myself a lot. I rarely get good servce and I do tip very good if the service is great. I think it does not matter if I am by myself or not, I should get good service.

Most certainly with a group...a (greedy) waitress is going to do his or her best to service your table.

Really? I eat alone at restaurants frequently and I'm almost always happy with my service. But then I have a friendly, cooperative, laid back approach to the wait staff right off the bat. Maybe that sets the tone. If you're willing to let them know you're a good customer they'll be a good host. Sure, they're being paid and it's their job to do the pleasing......but......I want a good experience no matter who takes the first step. Besides.....their job is tough. They deal with a lot of jerks. I make sure they know right off that I'll be a pleasant customer for them. It works.

It's exponential to the size of the group. Years ago when I ate out alone, I'd sometimes get the pity service, but otherwise is was the same.

The best way is to be a regular at a place you enjoy, make a point to say your servers name and be nice, also next time you go there if you ask to be placed at a table in that servers area they treat you better and they learn its profitable to serve you and treat you well.
