Methanol is not needed to make nitrous oxide, so you don't need methanol. Methanol and many of the chemicals made with methanol are toxic. If you don't understand the chemistry and the associated hazards you are a risk to yourself and the public at large. I run a research lab and I get methanol from chemical supply houses such as Aldrich. Rail car quantities for industrial uses are available from Methanex TSE:MX at much lower prices per unit volume.

Someone with a BS in Chemistry says that rubbing alcohol is methanol? That's scary...

You can buy methanol in various quantities from various companies, Fisher Scientific (http://www.fishersci.com) probably being the cheapest. You can pay with a credit card or a purchase order right over the phone, depending on if this is for personal or professional use.

You don't need methanol to make nitrous oxide. You can prepare it by heating ammonium nitrate to its melting point.

First of all rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol so the poster ahead of me's BS is B.S...

Secondly why are you making nitrous oxide? For racing or pleasure?

Third you can always try making it.

You could try a hardware store, or walmart. They tend to sell those sorts of things as solvents.

Or you could try the internet. Here are some sites selling it:

http://www.chemical.net/cn_store/find.asp?find%5Fspec=name%2C0%2CEXACT%2Cmethyl+alcohol&dept%5Fid=

More can easily be found by searching google for "chemical supplies", and searching the websites that come up.

"xmoregonex" is wrong,
rubbing alcohol != methanol
Rubbing alcohol does NOT equal methanol.
Methanol is poisonous; I would hope people would not use it as rubbing alcohol.

Methanol is tree alcohol; it can be produced by carefully heating wood and condensing out the alcohol.
