then we would do away with the problem of having idiots making stupid decisions. everyone knows that 80% of the population is a bunch of idiots. forcing people to own land to vote would decrease the amount of idiots voting because the implicit assumption in owning land is that you were smart enough to obtain the money to buy that land.

what a great idea. i think that an updated version of the original restriction of the right to vote based on property ownership is a great idea. i think that this country would benefit if only the people that had a VESTED interest in the operation of the government were allowed to exercise their opinions. this would help to eliminate those who treat politics too casually and therefore discredit their own opinions by doing so, as well as those that are incapable of understanding the philosophical implications of a debated political topic.

UPDATE!!!!!

I'll make the assumption that you are very young and naive, as well as anti-American. Where did you get this statistical information regarding 80% of Americans being "idiots?" First, the modern definition of "idiot" is uneducated or ignorant person. According to the 2000 U.S. Census approximately 80% of the U.S. population have a high school diploma or higher education. Therefore, your thinking leaves me wondering.

I was under the impression that if you're a citizen of the U.S. then you have the right to vote. I'll tell you this... if I was to do some research regarding the education and homeownership status of voters I have the feeling I would find the following results: The majority of those who don't exercise the right to vote are usually those who are uneducated and unmotivated (for XYZ reasons I won't get into now) to become involved in making differences in this country. The many that do vote are the privledged, educated class and homeowning folks who influence policy in the US and abroad. Therefore, IT IS the homeowners that make the idiot-type decisions we've been forced to endure lately.

NO, I don't think just any land owner should be allowed to vote. I think only those who have been able to acquire at least 500,000 acres, paid for free and clear, should be allowed to vote: Inherited land should not count.

Listen to my logic: It does not take a whole lot of brains to be a land owner, people with absolutely nothing going for them would qualify. Shoot I was given two pieces of land by my parents and I did not have to do damn one thing for them, but be their kid.

Yes, I like this little modification to your Idea: great thinking. I can already see all sorts of possibilities with this new arrangement. First I would drop the minimum wage and force everyone to work for near slave like wages including those with advanced degrees. With the extra money I would have "earned", I would buy an extra 500, 000 acres, and set it up, like my kid actually made it. Between my son and I, we would rule the world.

We would be in control of some of the smartest people in the land, because they were not ruthless enough to do what it takes to acquire this kind of power. Before to long, nobody would make enough money to buy even one acre, I would see to that.

Yes! Yes! you are on the right track, my son.

On A More Serious Note:

I know you are just concerned with the sad state of affairs the nation is in, but we don't want to over react. You have an education, use it to help educate those less fortunate.

Would you take a look at about 8 - 10 minutes of this inteview with Professor Steven Jones ? It's a 45 minute video and well worth looking at, to its end. At least, pass it on to those you care about.

What a screwed up idea. You're saying people who have not yet earned enough to purchase land, should not have a say-so in how our country is being run? That would eliminate most college age people, young marrieds, single parents, those with handicaps
people with illnesses in the family, and anyone with a low paying job. I think the idea is to encourage people to participate in their government by voting, not to force them to become disinterested and live however they are told. How much closer could we get to a dictatorship?

Some people just plain don't want to own land. They don't want the responsibility or the permanence. Would that mean they can't make a good decision in the government? Sheesh!

Dude, that's just as bad as being racist or sexist. Everyone has their own opinion, just because they don't share yours doesn't mean they're idiots. We've come a long way from the small colonies we grew from, and I doubt that the American people will tolerate restricting politics to people that you think are "qualified" to vote. Nobody likes a jackass!

I believe that is the way it was in the beginning in the newly-formed United States. Only people who owned property were allowed to vote. It was decided later that this provision eliminated many otherwise qualified people who also had stake in how their communities were run, so it was changed.

Wow--that's a great idea. I don't own land. I have two Masters degrees. (How many do you have?) I graduated summa *** laude from my undergraduate school. I keep up with politics. But that would mean I can't vote! Great way to disenfranchise the rest of us! Thanks!
