Most people are not happy with their lives. They dress and act differently to be someone else; to fit in with a certain crowd; to be accepted 'society'.
That's why I became a naturist. When the clothes (costumes) are shed, there is nothing to hide; nothing to classify you as being associated with rich or pore, smart or ignorant, superior or inferior.
Try social nudity and discover what freedom is. Get to know people for who they are, not who they are trying to be. It worked for me.

they don't like or approve of themselves, so they figure no one else will.
they put on a mask to hide thier own insecurites, and no one else will see them. of course the only ones that don't see it, are the ones with thier own masks on.
i don't know this is my opinion.

because their afraid to be themself and that you may find out what they are really like.
