Do it long enough at one sitting and you'll get a whopper of a headache. Place an adjustable lamp on either side of your TV screen far enough back so the light doesn't shine on the screen.
Turn the lamps to the lowest light setting when you watch movies. This will make it easier for your eyes to adjust to rapid changes of brightness and color contrast common with a lot of todays action movies.
This technique is called ambient lighting and small lights that shine on the area behind the sets are now being installed on some brands of mid to high end TV sets.

Yes and this is how you know they are ruining, Go look in the mirror over time you will notice yellow/brown spots on the white part of the pupil eye, This is what is happening. The white of the eye should be just that white, Over time looking @ TV in the dark puts a Strain on having to focus, Many persons are unaware of this, I must say looking at a scary movie in the dark is fun for me, But as I said over time this does have a negative effect on the eyes.

It might. Depends on the screen and the amount of light and how often you strain your eyes when pictures of naked bodies appear.
It would be a good idea to soften the darkenss with some ambient background light.

No. Just with anything . . . don't sit too close and strain your eyes. Unfotunately, when you're 40 and over, your eyes go straight downhill anyway . . . so enjoy watching a movie in the dark . . . and just wait . . .
