It's derived from rugby.

It sort of "developed" over time, from a form of soccer or rugby called "football".
I don't know his name, but there was a guy that got frustrated with not being allowed to pick up the ball and he just picked it up and ran with it to the goal. If anybody gets credit, it's him. I'm sure you can find it on the internet.
Basketball was an invented game by James Naismith. Abner Doubleday gets credit for baseball although all he did was organize an already existing game similar to cricket - he established a standard system of rules. But there's no one "inventor" of football.

Football was first used and created by the "Caveman" some 2,890,673 years ago. The exact same decendants who designed the game also ended up doing commercials for Geiko Insurance Co.

The guy was NOT fustrated about not being allowed to pick up the ball. He was frustrated that his team was LOSING so horriable. This was in college and I don't know the what the player's name was or what college he was in. His team was losing really bad and he just got so mad that his team couldn't get any points that he just picked teh ball up ran over and threw it in the net. Ok so the goal didn't count but it helped him get out his frustration.
