Depends on what you're looking to get out of it. And based on how often you play--for example, are you in a band or are you just starting out with guitar lessons?

While there are numerous ways to save money, you will get what you pay for, so do be careful. If you're serious about playing electric guitar, then treat this purchase as an investment and not an expense. If you're just looking to rock out on a budget, be aware that the cheaper the guitar and amp is, the quicker it will lose its value should you choose to sell it.

Lastly, a cheap guitar/amp will play and sound like a cheap guitar and amp. You should at least go down to a music instrument store and try out a few guitars for a few minutes to see what you like. You may wind up getting the same guitar online but at least you'd have *some idea* of what you're getting.

You can get really cheap guitar and amp packages at stores like Walmart, but the quality of these guitars really sucks. A good electric guitar starts at about $300 and a good 50 Watt amp will run another $200 new. Try looking in for sale ads in the paper for used ones. Music shops also sell used equipment.

You can get a pretty nice starter kit with a guitar, amp, picks, case, bag, book, electric tuner, and plug ins for about $200-$300 at ibanez.com.

Depends on the quality. But you'd better figure starting at about $250 for both and go up from there.
