I recommend the book "Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice For All Creation" by Olivia Judson. She listed few theories as to how monogamy arises. The main one is that for what ever reason, trying to find more then one partner will decrease your odds of having children at all, (in birds, if a male is trying to feed two broods, both may go hungry and fewer chicks may survive, then if he had stayed faithful).
However, there is a difference between true monogamy and social monogamy. True monogamy is where no matter what, a pair will not commit adultery. Social monogamy is where a pair is socially faithful, and help rear young, but it makes no assumptions that they are not sleeping around. Humans fall into the socially monogamous catagory. Basically, we have more success biologically if we pair up to raise our young, but that doesn't stop some of us from sleeping around.
So, no. Monogamy is the invention of those who want to raise young, not those who can't get laid.
