Chairman Mao was a Chinese political leader and poet. He is a fascinating figure, albeit a brutal one, as he was responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

He led China in a communist revolution (at least, that's what he called it). The reason there are so many Maoist guerillas today is probably because while traditional Marxists believed that revolution could / should only occur in industrialized countries, Mao adapted communist ideology to agrarian economies. Maoist revolutionaries today live in the countryside and build their base of support out of poor farmers, and have achieved some some measure of success using guerilla warfare against ruling governments.

While I don't agree with the form of government Mao established, when you're a poor farmer in the countryside, and your city government has all but forgotten and ignored you, Mao's example of a successful peasant's rebellion may be all that gives you hope for a better future.
