If you can drive a stick shift, get a Mazda Protege. I drive a 95 Mazda Protege LX, and it was recommended as one of the best cards for a college student to drive.

It gets about 30 miles a gallon on highway and about 25 mpg in town. It's sporty & can fit 4 people in with me and decent sized trunk. Low maintenance costs, never broke down on me. I bought mine used in 2001 and it's lasted 5 years and still going strong!

Keep the oil changed, keep air in tires correct amount, peek under hood once in awhile, it's a trusty reliable vehicle! And I've had a lot of used cars.

Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
Cheap, durable, reliable, easy to find parts and safe when you finally wreck it.
