I'm planning on getting my MBA when I'm finished with my Ph.D. I'm trying to decide if I should go straight in to business school and get a standard MBA, or if I should work and take night/evening classes for a professional MBA. Is there a difference between an MBA and a Professional MBA? Do employers look more favorably on an MBA than a professional MBA?

The degree will look exactly the same. Most people pick the EMBA program based on their need to work. What good does quiting work and tacking on $50,000 in debt do? You better hope you have somebody waiting to hire you when you finish.

I have no idea what you mean by "professional MBA" -- do you think full time programs are for amateurs? (I have an MBA, a PhD in Finance and have taught or studied at Duke, Berkeley, MIT, Wharton and U of MD -- and I have never heard that phrase).

In terms of getting a job, the quality of the school is more important than the type of program.

Most of the very best programs don't have evening programs -- and many don't have weekend programs. But those that do make an attempt to assure that the weekend or evening programs are first rate. For example, schools like Duke and Wharton have WEMBA programs. The degrees carry the same weight as the daytime program. Berkeley and NYU have night programs. Berkeley's is actually more selective than their daytime program.

On the other hand, most night programs are at schools that aren't as highly ranked. They are aimed at people who already have jobs. They aren't particularly good at getting you a better job when you are done.
