I have been pounding my head, not too hard because that would hurt, trying to recall a myth about a mask or a puppet. I fear that I can't, though I do seem to recall the use of a mask in some Asian and African myths (there are so many). As for the puppet, I do recall the use of a doll in African and Native American myths. Sorry, I wish that I could give you specifics.

"Romeo and Juliet" has a legendary quality and format, and there's a masked ball in that. I imagine that there are also legends surrounding the Italian carnivale and similar observances in the Caribbean. The Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche comes pretty close, but it's just darkness, not a mask (as I recall).

Do you consider the masks used in New Orleans? They started as a religious practice. People would put them on the faces of the dead to prevent them from haunting or something. Not quite sure.

False Face Society, Iroquois. Had the dream myself, but no Iroquois (I'm only partially Iroquois) was interested. Gave up and focussed my energies on other things.
