It has a certain effect as the costs to ship to smaller businesses that do not buy in truckload quantity is very high . The consumer is looking for the cheapest price due to the fact they have less discretionary income also . Looks like small businesses as we know them are going to have to reinvent themselves or face extinction . the big boxes are hurting all small businesses but they have waeknesses that can be exploited such as a small business can offer more personal service for example . They can give their customers special viewing hours to fit their schedule better . They can also do the legwork for people who are too busy or too lazy and would not mind paying a merchant a fair profit to do for them . Where there is a will there is a way althouigh that window is closing rapidly .

small businesses would close down all over and that is not because of soaring oil prices but because of capitalism has become now accepted theory all over and it is a game where economy of scale works. small businesses can not raise that kind of fund to reach that scale of economy and collapse and big businesses then collapse out of sheer pressure to give maximum return to their share holders. we have managed to build cities and make our life more miserable than what it was in jungle.
