No; mine works fine, and I used whatever brands I wanted to--all different.

No single company makes ever computer component. But you need to be very careful when buying your parts because there are different standards and technologies.
The most important thing is to select your motherboard carefully and make sure the other components will work with the Motherboard. For example mother boards only support either AMD processors or Intel and even then they only support certain AMD processors and certain Intel processors. Same with Video cards, hard drives and RAM in the case of these items brand isn't as important as technology.
If you're not sure what you're doing you will probably better off either finding a friend to help you or buying a computer whole.
If you're intent on building your own and don't know anyone who can help you feel free to contact me through my profile and send me your parts list. I'll help you make sure everything is compatible.

Your motherboard and processor is the main thing you need to make sure are compatible with each other. Otherwise you can mix and match.

Not at all.
You can mix and match to your heart's desire. You just have to make sure that each part is compatable with each other.
(This is mostly for RAM, the motherboard, and CPU). Beyond that, go for the best/cheapest stuff!
