I have a 95 Saturn SC1. I've been having problems with it so I took it to the dealership. My check engine light was coming on and they said it was my TRANS BODY VALVE. They said it needs to be replaced. What is a trans body valve? Is it expensive? Should I just get another transmission?

As old as it is, I wouldn't take it to a dealer....a regular shop may be able to do the work if you just tell them what the dealer said, and their hourly rate should be much better.
I would consider a second opinion before I let the dealer charge me so much....good luck

Have you had the transmission fluid changed according to the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance intervals (probably every 30,000 miles)? If not, and you never had the transmission serviced, then the next question is how well you maintained the engine. Did you have the engine oil and filter changed at least every 5,000 miles? Finally, the engine coolant should have been changed at least as often as specified by the manufacturer. If the car has not had regular maintenance, then you might be better off thinking about changing cars. However, the transmission job does not sound that bad unless the valve body can't be replaced without taking the transmission out of the car or it cost more than $800 to fix.

The valve body. You can get another tranny at a junk yard for 100 bucks. The valve body is not difficult to replace. You just have to be really careful. The only parts you need to get other than the valve body is a transmission filter kit. Just be sure that everything stays perfeclty clean and goes right back the way it is supposed to. You should be able to do this without pulling the transmission. Good luck.

The Saturn is GM's LAUGHABLE try at designing and promoting a automobile to compete with Japanese vehicles. Although they have got multiplied the fine AND the LOOKS, they're nonetheless A LONG WAY from being a major chance to ANY Japanese make.

apparently valve bodies are a constant problem with Saturns, the good news is they are not hard to change and can be replaced from the engine compartment, get a good mechanic to do it, not the dealer, you didn't say if you were having transmission shifting problems, if you aren't do as Wolf said in his 1st post, change the transaxle fluid and put in the Saturn additive with the new fluid, you might get lucky and save the valve body

Call two or three PRIVATE shops and one of the nation wide franchises. Ask the same questions. My bet is you will get answers on pricing significantly lower than the dealership.
Good luck, car troubles are never fun...
