The PRC was founded On October 1, 1949 Mao Zedong . Here is an excerpt from his speech "the Chinese people have stood up".
It may have just been rhetoric; but at least officially sounds like a republic.

Actually, China is a republic since it doesn't have a king or queen as its ruler.

I guess it is the same in the USA. We are supposed to be a democratic republic, but in actuality we are an oligarchy.
