Probably the same because they're both quick pains.

Pain is entirely subjective. as a pierced person, there are different piercings that hurt more than other ones, and ones that barely hurt and others that brought a tear to my eye.

but the most important thing when getting your ear pierced, is

DO NOT USE A PIERCING GUN!!!

they spatter blood, and are often reused, so you can catch, and pass-on, blood-borne pathogens which can include HIV and Hepatitis C.

they cause blunt-force trauma on the tissue they pierce. a piercing needle, at a REAL piercing shop, are hollow, beveled needles, with a razor-sharp tip which cuts a slit in the ear, and the rest of the needle follows through and stretches the hole to the desired size. a piercing stud rips through tissue and forces its way into the ear.

the piercing studs are far too short to heal a piercing, and the butterfly backs trap dead tissue and bodily fluids trying to drain from the wound.

the aftercare fluid that is often given with piercings do more harm than good. the active ingredient is used in spermicides and cleaning agents. they kill everything, not just pathogens and germs, but also cells that are trying to rebuild up and heal the wound.

proper aftercare for a piercing includes soaking it in saline solution or sea-salt water. either heat a shotglass full of saline solution in the microwave until it is as hot as you can handle dipping your piercing into, or mixing 1/8th a teaspoon NON IODIZED sea-salt with 8oz of water, as hot as you can handle, and pouring it into a shotglass and storing it in a water bottle in the refrigerator for next time. this needs to be done no more than twice daily, as more would cause the site to be too clean.

Wait, wait, wait! Ear piercing by gun? Or by needle? if it is my choice than I think ear piercing by gun. If the doctor squeezes your finger hard enough, the prick doesnt really hurt. I personally LOVE being pierced by needles, and I hate the gun. The gun hurts because it gets the back too tight on the earring. Then you have to pull it off a little. Plus, the girls squeeze really hard when they do it. Its like they have a vendetta against your ear.

I always found those finger pricks to be awful... mostly because they squeeze your finger after poking it so all of the blood goes into that little tube!
