You have not given us enough information.

Is it getting cold at all when you put freon in, even for a little while?

The compressor has lots of places it could be leaking....does it sound like it is cycling, as in at least not being frozen? Is the compressor clutch turning? Is the belt slipping? Could the compressor be trying to lock up?

Have you tried the freon with dye to see if it has a leak? Some mechanics don't like using the dye, but as old as your vehicle is, it still might be worth a try.

There are less expensive things to try before you go replacing a compressor or something like that, but with what you are describing, it sounds like it has a major leak. Just hope it is not the evaporator core.

If you can afford to take it to a local shop, see if they can use their sniffer to look for a leak.

I had my compressor, expansion valve, and receiver dryer replaced on my old 93 Dodge Caravan about two years ago and spent @$450.00...

I had a shop replace an evaporator core in a '96 Plymouth voyager last summer, cost $1250.00

A/C work ain't cheap....good luck.

YOUR A/C SYSTEM HAS A SERIOUS LEAK(S). IN ORDER TO FIND THEM SO THAT YOU CAN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE LEAK(S) IS TO TAKE IT TO AN A/C SPECIALIST AND LET THEM PULL THE VAC ON YOUR SYSTEM. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN ACTUALLY FIND THE PROBLEM. NOW IF THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT COMING ON AT ALL, THEN I WOULD SAY YOU NEEDED A COMPRESSOR. AND EVEN IF YOU DO HAVE TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR, THE SYSTEM STILL HAS TO HAVE THE VAC PULLED ON IT AND THEN BE CHARGED WITH THE SPECIFIED REFRIGERANT.

You can tell if the compressor works by starting the car, turning on the a/c and listening, you will hear it kick in if it is working.

Yes, those have an expansion valve. I've changed them before. They are a little pricey but affordable. It's probably stuck shut. I'd go there first. Good luck.
