A great rhythm section. You can get away with having a fairly cruddy guitarist/singer/keyboardist, but you need tight bass & drums which work together or it sounds hopeless.

And if you're playing live you need personality and stage presence. Too many bands just go through the motions like they're practising at home or something.

Motorhead have the lot.

A desire to stay true to the music...if it ever becomes a job...RUN! After that, lyrics and vocals that can be understood, and have meaning to people.

A great vocalist is NOT as big a deal as one might think...there are tons of crappy singers in the Hall of Fame, or that are revered by millions. Consider Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Axl Rose...what made them larger than life was WHAT they sang, not how they sang it.

the most important is lyrics because you have to reach people with what you have with your words. i guess that the bass matters second just because you can kinda play it as a guitar and you can like "hit" it so it can kinda sound like a drum.
**edit** i didnt see all of these. that would be the 3rd choice. =)

I think it is the band members vibe - how they get along on a personal level shows in the music that they play. Of course the musician that keeps the tempo is the drummer - he is essential in carrying the rest of the band!

Lyrics because the song needs to mean something and vocals if the singer sounds like crap people won't listen to them
