Study literature, and you will realize that Rowling is a literary genius. She is highly educated in the classics, and her writing shows it. Some schools are even studying Harry Potter now, as they contain so many good thematic elements. A book of this quality can be appreciated by the educated at all levels.
Here are some ideas from John Granger, taken from the website below:
"Why The Potter Books Are So Popular"
In conclusion, to understand the meaning and popularity of Chamber of Secrets, 'Remember Cedric Diggory!' As with C. S. Lewis's Narnia and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Rowling's Harry Potter books enjoy such remarkable sales and popularity because of:
1) The Need for them: The desert that needs water is both spiritual and mental. Soft heads and hard hearts long for truth, beauty, and goodness even though they have been taught to despise or disregard these as subjective or sentimental qualities. Maslow said 'a capacity is a need'; our denied or misdirected spiritual capacities have created a nearly irresistible craving and need for Inkling quality reading.
2) A WOW! Story: Whatever the demand for edifying literature, if it isn't engaging and entertaining as story it cannot have the desired effect. Ms. Rowling's detailed, magical world allows and invites head first immersion and suspension of disbelief. Her readers identify with Harry and are rushed to a catharsis in spirit with their hero via the imagination. They absorb, consciously and unconsciously, just sentiments, heroic virtue, and Christian doctrine while loving the adventures in which this moral education is wrapped. Ms. Rowling's affection for the works of Austen and Dickens (and her like talent for 'manners and morals' fiction and believable characters) is evident in every Potter book.

for a number of reasons. i'll give you a few...
1. The books have an interesting story, plot, and charecters that you just can't seem to get enough of.
2. They have a good, flowing style. I could spend up all night reading one (and i have) without getting bored for a moment.
3. It's a mystery/adventure/fantasy/etc. i suppose, and you just can't go wrong now can you.
4. Many who've read the books get hooked the moment they start and keep reading and reading because they 'grew up' with them.
5. The books reach all audiences and are understandable, yet not an idiot read.
more to come...
p.s. greebo i disagree strongly with you on that point. I read Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit frequently (i love them dearly as well) and I still enjoy Harry Potter. It doesn't really matter what else you have read (though you could make a valid argument out of it) but of who you are as a person and a reader.

Well, I can't answer for everyone who reads the books, but I can tell you why I like them. They are a well written form of escape from the harsh reality of real life. While I think that JK Rowling wrote them for children's entertainment, I think they transcend the ages and can be enjoyed by adults as well. The characters aren't perfect, they're growing up, learning, and making mistakes along the way. The setting of the story is what makes it magical. I mean, a part of the world unseen by those who aren't part of it, magic, mysterious, and captivating.

Truth is, they are some of the few books written for teens in this generation. They are also written in a way that you can identify with either Harry or some of his friends and in a way that once you read a few pages, you have to finish. Also, if you notice, people don't analyze them, they just read them.

i like the book because the characters said in the book can be felt as real. the writer has written the book in the way it is real like there are wizards in this world living secretly. the suspense of the book makes everyone interested in it. the writing is simple and easy to understand. the writer has written all that we knew but in a different angle and it's use like the broomstick used as a transport. there are unbelievable persons in that book like the centaur, hagrid, buckbeak and all.

Because the author has created, and details, a colorful and entertaining universe. With good charactor developement, and a fine storyline.
Many authors have done the same thing. If you don't like Rowling, try Burroughs, or Stout, Chandler or Hammett, or even Faulkner.
So, quit bitching about this one, and find something you do like.

They're exciting.
Harry is a misfit in his home, may young people also feel that their family doesn't want them or understand them.
Many people would love to be whisked off into a land where the smart are strong and the weak can control magic and win.
It's great escapism.

I actually think they are overrated. I read the first one and while entertaining...I did'nt think it was THAT good. I think the Narnia Chronicles are much better! If they are getting kids to read and interested in books in general than that is a great thing, but I just think there are better books out there for kids.
