Wow. I guess if you had a child and suffered from some horrible mental illness that made you crazy and kill your kids we should all hate you and kill you for it. You don't think that the person that hates Andrea Yates the most is her? She probably hates herself and wants to kill herself more than anyone. I feel so bad for her and her family. She had a long history of mental illness, and been in mental institutions and they still couldn't help her and then she inflicted harm on her own children. Anyway, what I think is that we should reinstitutionalize the mentally ill. I know that in the 60s there was a big movement to give them treatment and help them live normal lives amongst the rest of us, but what happens is that they are being let out too early or just in a short period of some improvement, but the problem ultimately doesn't go away. Many of them cannot live on their own, or maybe while taking medication they can. but some don't have access to regular medication and end up living on the streets, making up a big portion of our homeless.

I don't know what the answer is. But I definitely do not agree with you on this.

That's a tough question...on one hand, you would think someone should have to pay for doing such a horrific thing! But, on the other hand, I believe they said she was on some sort of an anti-depressant and I know for a fact what awful things they can do to your mind. My sister in law is a wonderful person and always upbeat, cracking jokes, playing with her children and very happy. She's been on Paxil for 6 months and recently started having really bad side effects...extreme depression, feeling her kids would be better off without her, feeling completely hopeless and unloved. In 3 days she attempted suicide 2 times. This is not something she would ever even think about! These drugs they put people on can completely take them out of their sences. They don't realize what they're saying and doing. I've never heard so many awful things come out of her mouth about my family...but we know she didn't mean it and it wasn't her talking. It was the medication they have her on. So, although it was just an awful thing Andrea Yates did...she was not in her right mind. She was in a different reality and had no idea what she was doing. Her friends and family and even her husband said how she was such a wonderful mother and how much she loved her children. I do honestly believe it was not her fault. Go check out these websites and get some real insight on what these drugs can do to a person before you statr pointing fingers...the drug companies are the ones who should be imprisoned!

http://www.webmd.com

Check out both pages...type in PAXIL or any other anti-depressant in webmd.com.

I hope others will do some research on this and realize how horrible these drugs are for most...not all...people.
Take care... ~Kendra Leigh

The Andrea Yates case is a perfect example of why the Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity plea exists. Only an idiot would think that she deserves to be punished. She had, and still has, a mental illness that kept her from knowing that it was wrong to kill her children. She felt that she was saving them from hell.

If you want to blame anyone for the deaths of those children, blame her idiot husband and the evil fundamentalist minister that preached how she was condemning her children to hell. They are the guilty parties.

I hate to admit it, but yeah, that dumb stupid bi*tch should not have the gift of life, considering how she snuffed it on 5, count 'em, 5 innocent children -- her own, no less. What a monster! And her husband is no prize either.

And Mama Pastafa, or whatever your name is, I respectfully disagree. Unlike you, I can't claim I know what she knew when she was drowning her children, but the thoughts running through her head during the first drowning must have been abominable. Yet she did it 4 more times. Hey, I'm as much of a bleeding heart liberal as the next person, but you're hemorrhaging.

Wow. This is the most vindictive, unforgiving group I have ever seen on Yahoo. I hope none of you or your relatives ever develop a mental illness and commit a horrible crime because if the majority of this group is on the jury, you will fry.

I'd much rather pay to house and feed this woman than see the so-called "celebrities" and pro athletes live the way they do.

Death penalty is dumb.

1. It is NOT a deterent. At all. Look at the statistics - they don't lie.

2. Why does the Government kill people to show people that killing people is wrong!?!

3. I'm so sick of evangelical christians that are for the death penalty and against abortion. A life is a life is a life - Regardless. Quit looking to the bible as literal - do you REALLY think that Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs to church!?

4. She was diagnosed as insane. Laws in her state can't "fry" insane people. Disagree - write a letter to your congressmen and vote.

Peace out

this woman had a very difficult life. she was living in a converted School bus. I just wanna know, where was the father when all this was going on? The woman clearly had a hard time raising 5 children while going in and out of mental hospitals for 2 years. He should have seen it coming....

Isn't anyone that is lacking enough common sense to stop themselves from murdering someone insane?

Anyone that kills is demonstrating to a strong degree that they aren't of sound mind.

If you kill your kids, wife, brother, coworker you definatly have mental issues that were beyond your control.

Even the low life that kills a Pizza guy for $14 is showing severe psychopathic disorders.

I feel sorry for all murderers, who in their right mind kills someone? Lets put them in the mental-health system, so that they can be rehabilitated ...

I don't care about mitigating circumstances! That woman drowned her 5 kids!!! The oldest fought back and she chased him down and dragged him back to the tub, I don't care if she was mentally deranged, or not she should fry, Normally don't support the death penalty but forget rehabilitation no one no matter what the circumstance should be allowed to see another day if they MURDER their children. God forgive me but may that woman rot in hell!
