I was nervous about fitting in. So I think that is the focus of your question. Seems like you're a guy, so I can tell you stuff I would have wanted to know about the social aspect.
Alcohol is a great discovery (if u r not already a lush), BUT it can get you on academic probation. Also, BE CAREFUL who you get a ride home from!! I got a ride with this clean-cut guy, but found out that he was going to have one beer after another while driving. It was too late. Lucky we didn't crash.
If you get a choice of dorms, and if you decide to pick the dorm with alot of freshman athletes, WATCH YOUR BACK! Not on every floor, but on mine, practical jokes were nasty. I advise you to do what I did and **if a sports team wins, and you are a short guy, not aggressive or roudy, then LEAVE THE DORM FOR 3 HOURS!! They hogtied one guy naked and put him in an elevator. Another time they lit and threw firecrackers at a guy.
Hope that your roommate is not a pushover. One guy got picked on just because they didn't like his roommate. The roommate was either gay or very feminine.
I know this sounds like a prison, but when you use the shower, be VERY aware of who is in the area. It was popular to take guy's towels and stuff so they are totally naked when they go back to their room, if they made it back.
If you join a frat, as I did and later dropped out during hazing, learn and MEMORIZE the names, majors and hometowns of as many frat members (not the pledge class, but people already in the frat). It is common for the members to dump BIG TIME on the pledges. I scored the lowest, you don't want that. Something I WISH I had known, is where the women sat at lunch. Find it and sit in that area. Chances of "meeting" women are good. I ate with a guy once who ate their regularly and told me he'd "done" 3 woman at one table (JEALOUS!!).
Don't do what I did and take all hard classes the first semester! I wanted to get them out of the way, but got buried. My roommate took 2 hard classes and 3 blow-offs. I thought it was irresponsible, but I ended up finishing at another college, he stayed. It may not matter who form your school is going to your college because you may not see them.
I went to a middle sized school for the time (15k people). I graduated from a small one where it was very hard to fit in with all the revolting preppie students. By the way, to avoid all the crap I mentioned, my roommate started acting like a tough guy. DO NOT do that! Tough or not, you can get your balls handed to you by a group of people. Oh, I almost forgot, find out what "traditions" take place on each floor of the dorm, or the major stuff, and if there's a floor of women who strip and run through the cafeteria, lock the exit door and get a seat by the elevators!
Also, on the guys side, if you were on the 13th floor, you were pressured to do that (I was not on that floor).
IF you are going to an elite school instead of a state school, none of this "fun" might apply.
Good luck, have fun, and you might join a frat just for the beer, but don't cop an attitude or become a jerk-off.
Speaking of jerking-off, don't schedule classes the same time as your roommate, the most important advice of all.
Don't let the work interfere with your fun.

Alot of nervousness. But once you get into the swing of things and realize your goals... you may really LOVE it. I know I did and do. Just don't get to messed up and fail all your classes... believe it or not, it's hard to bounce back after that.

Relax, do your best and just enjoy it. It's not as bad as people say it is. If you study and listen to your instructors, you will have an amazing time. It's freedom like you've never known and you are able to learn so much about yourself and others.

I was terrified at first but once I got into the swing of things and got through my first semester without gaining of losing, I knew I was able to do it. Plus I passed my classes and that gave me confidence. Don't take on too much of a load and pace yourself.

Given homework and what's expected of you're 2 multiple issues. Assigned homework could be extensive in analyzing, exceedingly for a historic previous considerable and finding on which instructions you're taking. working example, a math classification many times has approximately an hour of artwork. Being in A&S, like i became, you have plenty to examine and you will probable spend so plenty extra time interpreting textile and memorizing than doing "actual" homework.

Everything will be new.
Roommates are hard to learn to live with. Remember, you don't have to be best friends with your roommate, but you have to live with him.
Classes require more independent work. You don't have homework assignments that are checked daily...keep on top of your work or you'll regret it.
Find a way to motivate yourself to go to class.
If you're away from home (far away) you'll be homesick. It's normal.
A whole new world of partying...be careful, but have fun.
There isn't someone watching out for you.
Try to sleep. Even if it's just for a few hours a night (day).
The food WILL make you sick. Make sure you have Tums or something.
If you go home for breaks, expect it to be strange. You're used to doing things when you want...your parents aren't.
Just enjoy yourself. This is it. The best four years of your life.

Weight gain and stress? After the first semester, it's all downhill. Ever heard of the freshman 15.
