My neice's computer is the HP pavilion a24w computer. She has not upgraded the antivirus software since 2003 and I can't stabilize the computer long enough to upgrade the antivirus software. Suggestions anyone? Thanks.

The Blaster worm (W32.Blaster.A and its variants) targets a security issue related to the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) function that Microsoft addressed with a released security update. Blaster targets computers with out-of-date software, and those computers remain at risk of infection until the update is installed.

To end the Blaster worm process

1.
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

2.
Click the Task Manager button.

3.
Click the Processes tab.

4.
Click the Image Name column heading to sort the processes alphabetically by name.

5.
Look for a process named Msblast.exe. If you find it, click the name to select the process, and then click the End Process button.

6.
Close the Task Manager.

Otherwise you can download the noadware software, This software will help you to find out all the infection from your computer. This is free for scan and download.

Safe mode generally does not allow updates over the internet, although it is a dandy place to run the antivirus software.

I carry around antivirus software on a CD, so I can load it on a customer's computer without a working network connection. You can arrange this if you have access to another computer with a CD burner.

If you have the recovery and software CD's , it may be quicker and easier to reformat and reload. If you will lose important files, then there is no option but to clean it up.

You could boot up the computer in safe mode by tapping F8 when it starts and update it while its in safe mode. Safe Mode does not allow anything to run except stuff needed to remove a virus/worm etc and the processes needed to run the computer. After updating your antivirus and the security update from microsoft you should be fine.
