There are many reasons why people are overweight and it's wrong to generalize. Some people are naturally heavy, and unless you have been in that situation, you have no idea how difficult it is to avoid being overweight. Almost all people in this category who go on a diet to lose weight will gain it back within a couple of years. A study a few years back analyzed the few out of thousands that were able to maintain their correct weight. The successful ones were able to keep their daily caloric intake to 1300 calories a day, plus walked several miles a week. If you think that is not hard, I suggest you try to eat only 1300 cal/day for a week, let alone for the rest of your life. Very few people can do that.
On the other hand, there are people who are overweight simply because they are careless about what and how much they eat, and are sedentary. It is these people that have raised the percentage of obese people in recent years. Too much eating out (not just fast foods, either--most restaurant meals are too fat and too much), too many "convenience" foods, too easy to snack, and too easy to avoid exercise.
The problem is it is not possible to tell which category a person fits into so don't be too quick to criticize. You know the saying "don't judge unitl you've walked a mile in the other's shoes"? That applies ten times over to overweight people. (BTW, I am not overweight.)

I don't think we think it's OK to be fat nut there are more reasons out there then just diet, lack of exercize and those things. I was in a horrific car accident 10 years ago and was stuck in awheelchair for 8 years. I gained 150 pounds and it is hard now to lose it b-cuz I walk with a completely stiff leg now(it doesn't bend) and it is hard to walk. So instead of judging someone maybe get to know someone who is fat and then encourage them to get healthy (not lose weight).

Americans are getting fatter because we eat at places like McDonald's and we are very inactive. We don't walk, we drive, we don't push the mower, we ride it, and we don't drink water, we drink pop. The reason people say its ok to be fat is because certain over weight hollywood stars have proclaimed they are happy being fat, and they gain even more fans that way, because they are more "normal" and easier to relate to. Also, sometimes people that aren't fat, date fat people, because they won't have to worry about people stealing their lovers and etc..esteem issues...but one thing is for sure..it is NOT ok to be fat. It ruins your health

bad lifestyles, unhealthy dieting, stress and overwork lead to obesity. I think that is the reason. Some people think it is okay because they have a good self esteem and they have probably tested everything to lose weight and fail, so the only thing left is to deal with it and accept who they realy are and look like. personally i dont think there isnt aything wrong with it.

It seems like in our society today, a lot of people just want to be the way they are, because they know it annoys someone.
