The saying that 'someone is on the square' means that they are open and honest about something.
So someone who is involved in a love triangle isn't being open and honest with the other two people in the triangle.

well "on square" refers to being on the level or honest with someone and well a lovers triangle is the exact opposite of that triangle being 3 people involved in an affair where not all 3 people are aware about the relationships between the others --well thats my interpretation anyway
