You start by deciding on what you want the car to do. In other words, a plan. If you want a 62 Chevy low rider with hydraulics, you would plan it differently than a pimped out 77 Caprice on 26 inch wheels or a riced 80's Honda with a wing and custom paint job. .

It totally and absolutely depends on what shape the car is in and how much you are willing to invest in it. Is it rusted out on the body? What shape is the interior in? Does the engine run? How many miles are on the engine? Do the electrical parts work, brake lights, head lights, blinkers, ect...? Is it manual or automatic transmission? If manual, AND let's say it runs, can you put it in 1st gear and let the clutch out and it moves forward? There are a lot of questions to be answered before you can just say "Where do I start?". Normally you would star with the drive train, then move to the interior, but I have no clue what shape of vehicle you are talking about. Need more info. I own my own shop and this is what my shop does but to give you more precise direction I need more information.
