They do stick a needle in your back. I've given birth to 5 children, and have never actually seen it. I had so much pain - I just begged for the medicine! It only stings for a few seconds when the needle goes in, a good anesthesiologist will do it quickly. You might feel a little rush when the medicine first goes in - but nothing really that is a big deal. The pain of labor is far far worse!

With my last birth, they actually hooked up the epidural at the beginning of labor, so when it came time for me to want it - all they had to do was press a button. And it was sooooo nice, wish they had thought of that before!

My 4th child came so fast she was au natural. That was the worst pain of my life so I give you a lot of credit for that.

With the upcoming birth of my twins - the first thing I have done is make sure that the same anesthesiologist is still employed. I wouldn't know how to make it through without him!!

Definitely wait until you are in labor to make a final decision. Your labor might go so fast you won't have time or really feel the need. I found it more difficult with the epideral, since I don't like not being able to move. Like you can't get up to go to the bathroom or whatever, you have to have a catheter. Then after you deliver all you can do is lay there for awhile. And it seemed to take longer to recover afterwards. Anyways that's just my opinion. But it didn't hurt too bad to get it in. The hardest part is definitely staying still through the contraction, which is when the like to put it in.

Yes, it's a big needle but it really didn't hurt at all. The only hard part was sitting still through a contraction. But after that it's smooth sailing!

I couldn't see the needle, but it didn't matter to me. As you know the labor is worse :) I think it felt a little like a bee sting. When they moved the catheter around it sent sharp pains up my back..but they were gone as soon as they came. Good Luck!

YES.....but from what I have been told I had a bad one. It hurt like heck when the needle went in.......3 times!!! they had to puncture 3 times before he got it in and when he did there was a horrid "pang" down into my right leg. I could not move my right leg at all. from my right butt to the knee I had nothing........I coudl not even turn in bed. my mom (an RN) and husband had to literally turn and repositon me in bed. My hubby got a crash course in bed mobility. thank god my mom knew all the proper lifting and turning tequnices. I had NO use of that leg at all. My mom said he must have hit a nerve. and every contraction sent a horrid dull ache in the crotch area, as though I had been kicked.......but again, I was told that this was not normal.

the needle is not as big as you think. some anesthetist are better than others, some will give you a "local" numbing agent while the start it. but the end results will be worth it.

When I had my epidurals neither one hurt worse than a bee sting.
I have two children and the epidural work great.

It's no big deal. It's a little sting that's it, no worries.
If you went through natural labor, then your strong enough to do anything. Go for it!!!

you know what i think you should go all natural this time again. You will feel better in the end knowing you sucked all the pain up for your angel w/ out putting your baby at risk. Not to sound rude but i feel that women that get the epidural don't consider the risks. what if your baby's allergic to it, what if you move and become pluralized?
