He's only got 8 homers, but he still had 65 RBI and the third-highest OBP in the National League. And comparing him to Jason Varitek is a joke, considering the latter is batting less than .240 and has a .327 OBP. Using homers as the only comparison makes no sense.
Considering what they gave up, the Yankees got a steal. Sure, they gave up a first-round pick, but he's a guy who's on pace for 175 Ks over a full season. Even if they don't keep Abreu for the next few years, they haven't given up much to pursue a title this year.
Dont' get me wrong - I'm not at all a Yankees fan. But I admire them for, once again, going out and getting a piece they think will help them win. I wish my team's ownership would do the same more often.

Here are the stats on Abreu:
"Abreu was batting .277 with eight homers and 65 RBIs. His 91 walks led the majors and his .427 on-base percentage was third in the National League. He has 198 home runs and 841 RBIs over 10 seasons." I think the Yankees are getting desperate to beat the Red Sox. This is a great trade for the Yankees

Bobby is a Mister moody, maybe with a chance to win something besides the best National League team in Pennsylvania championship he may be inspired or the pressure of NYC may turn him into another Eddie Lee Whitson, anyway with Bernie probably done after this year unless the Yanks pony up some money and "Bubba" not scaring anyone with the bat he is a stop gap measure. The "Chef" is probably done in New York so that leaves Melky, Johnny and Hideki, throw in Abreau and you can rotate 4 guys through 3 positions plus DH if they cannot get a first baseman, Giambi plays the field or attempts to play the field and Andy Phillips becomes super sub

Sorry Killer Chick, but this trade just put the Yanks over the top. They will soon take over the lead and leave your Sox in the dust. Not even mentioning all the upside that comes with Lidle, this is the best trade of the year and the best trade the Yanks have made since Clemons. They gave up very little for the 32yr old. I'm sure you know the major stats. But, did you know, he's second in majors for pitches/AB behind Youkilis. Seems minor, but a key to Yankee and Red Sox success.

I think this is a good trade for the Yankees. They gave up some minor leaguers, but kept the key guys they wanted to keep. Giving up their 2005 first round pick is a risk. I don't know how much longer the Yankees can decide they don't need draft.
Sheffield was gone at the end of the season - the fact that they didn't pick up his option in Spring Training showed that. Then he got hurt. So he's elsewhere in 2007.
Williams is retiring. A great ballplayer, but who age has caught up with. It is a shame, as he was everything you could want in a ballplayer and more.
I do feel bad for Cabrera, who was doing a good job for the Yankees. But let's face it, if you are in a Yankees uniform, you should expect a "name" to replace you at any moment.

I feel that this was a bad trade for the Yankees because Abreu is now getting into the later stages of his career. Obviously, Abreu was on roids, so now that he is off of them his power has diminished tremendously. The Yankees have traded 4 young prospects for a guy who is only going to be in the majors for at most 5 more years.

I AM GETTING TIRED OF THIS TOPIC ON HOW THE YANKEES ARE PAYING SO MUCH FOR THEIR PLAYERS!!!! The Red-sox pay close to the same for their players. And why do you care. Who won the Homerun Derby last year? Who has the 3rd highest OB%? And this is probably temperary since he is a Right-fielder and.......wow, so is Gary Sheffield. Bobby can be a DH, and Giambi can play 1st. Bobby is a good add on the line-up and is good for a base-hit or homerun once in a while.

The Yankees will benifit of of this trade. Abreu may not have alot of Home Runs, but he is still a good player who can be balanced and will help the Yankees.

As a red sox fan , i will butcher you. Abreu is not a power hitter anymore, but is a linedrive hitter. He has a better OBP than Youkilis and I was hoping that the sox would get him for nixon. The option kick in on his contract will cost NY 34.5 mil over the 2.5 years and could cause dissention in the outfield for next year, but it was a good pickup fo ny.

You are absolutely right about the stats not warranting the trade, but if you think about it, on that terrible phillies team, abreu and howard were the only ones really depended on for the power and rbi delivery, with the occasional exception of utley. Think about the affect of having damon, jeter, giambi and hopefully arod ahead of you, having much more responsibility for producing the runs than abreu does.
