I've shocked it, and replaced about a third of the water. is there a way to get really dirty water clean again?

Filtration, water chemistry , cleaning and sanitizer levels are the key to clear water. If it was just a mud problem, it would have settled on the bottom by now. Vac it up and then clean out your filter. Isuspect you have more issues than just that. Take a sample into your local pool pro, explain what type of pool, size and type of filter you have and follow his advice. You aren't mentioning if this is a cheap little above ground that's a quick set up type or an inground, so that's as far as I can go.

It needs to be swept with a vacuum hose for the pool. If that doesn't work, you might have to drain it completely & refill, which is a lot of water. In the future, insist that the kids rinse off with the hose before getting into the pool.

try getting one of those pool vacumm and there are all people you can hire to clean it. Also keep the kids out of the mud!
