In my experience, about 10 by 15 max. Think prison cell for two inmates.

Free housing?!!! Not a chance. At least several hundred per month. About as much as a small apartment off campus would be. It's usually combined with a meal contract. All this varies from school to school.

I personally think everybody ought to spend the first two years in a dorm. Immerse yourself in the college life. Make friends. Also helps avoid homesickness the first quarter.

It depends on what you need and don't need. Some dorms come with a fridge and microwave, some don't. If yours doesn't, I would recommend getting in touch with your future roommates and discussing splitting the cost on things that everyone will use, such as a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. Other than that, your biggest expense will be bedding - try finding a twin size comforter set at Kohl's or Target on sale. You'll probably wind up spending a few hundred dollars. My dorm room came with a fridge and microwave already and I still ended up spending a couple hundred.

Depends on the college you are attending. Usually in the brochures, the fees are explained as "room and board" which means where you live and what you eat. First, most colleges have a "freshman" dorms. For many reasons, new students need the coddling that freshmen dorms and resident advisors can offer. Many have community activities especially for freshmen. The rooms - unfortunately - are small. The thinking is - you're here to attend classes. Rooms are for sleeping. (smile) Dining Hall is for eating and usually there is a Student Center for 'meet and greet. Your food might be available in MEAL PLANS - meaning you might eat 5 days a week- 3 meals per day, or 7 days a week - 2 meals, etc. As for me - I ate lunch and dinner and on weekends - I fried up my own chicken and potatoes! (smile) Now - my experience was based on luck. I attended the University of Detroit. There was a freshman dorm - complete with bathrooms down the hall shared by 20 girls. In my 'wisdom', I walked up to the "Senior" dorm and signed up. Nobody caught it and for the next FOUR YEARS, I was able to live in comfort! I had carpet on the floor -shared a room with one roomate - and a bath that separated another room (two girls on the other side) Complete bathroom with two sinks, a nice, big shower, storage space, air conditioning, tiled floor in the bath - large mirrors! A very nice RA. Frig and sinks right outside the rooms with phones on each end of the hall - and BOYS had access to the rooms (no sneaking them in). It was a mature dorm and I was able to adjust wonderfully. The girls in the freshman dorm didn't like the bare floors, the old fashioned heat system, but they got used to it - it's college. In other words - you will learn to adjust. Now, my daughter attended a college and there were NO dorms - all the students had apartments which 4 girls shared. They bought their own food. If you are working and can afford your own housing - it's fine - but you can miss out sometimes on the "campus camaradarie" sometimes. Whatever your choice - be sure you are mature enough to handle things.

The only thing you need that you don't already have is sheets for dorm beds (they are usually a different size from regular "twin" sheets). You should add a small refrigerator and microwave. Stores like Target usually have specials on small, quiet thermoelectric refrigerator/coolers. You can equip your dorm room for $200~$500, not including computer.
