THIS IS THE ANSWER RIGHT HERE...TRUST ME I KNOW:
Love who you are and be honest with yourself(even if it is a bad quality)...its all about your opinion of yourself, not really what other think. iono but this is what i think but i have always really known my qualities and who i am from a very young age and i am so blessed because i almost always feels secure and safe and i am always myself so i didn't have to go through all that high school drama and popularity crap. : ]
For example. I know about myself...good and bad. And the bad doesnt matter because I 1)ACCEPT IT and 2) love it. yes i love it even if it is a bad quality like sometimes being bossy which i am. I love it because if it is a quality of mine it most likely will not change because i am true to myself. Even if it is bad i am comfortable because the last thing i want to do is censor my own life from myself. It's me and i love it because i wouldnt be who i am without it and i love who i am. I know that i am nice and funny and love to make others feel good. But i also know that i can be hyper at times and bossy and controlling. I even tell my friends this and sometimes they dont agree but i still believe it because i know myself more than anyone! the last thing you want is for others to know yourself more than you...because then what will you have? that means that you dont know who u are and i cant imagine that with special doctors studing you and finding out who you really are and how u feel before u do....and yeah also i know that i talk too much and ramble and im random...I TALK TO MUCH! lol
anyways hope this helps and remember
Love who you are and be honest with yourself(even if it is a bad quality)...its all about your opinion of yourself, not really what other think cuz u should know urself more than they do

1. Do some serious introspection. Make sure you have plenty of time and are free from distractions.
2. You can also discover your true qualities under extreme circumstances, such as in a crisis. I don't recommend going out in search of one to put yourself thru though!
3. Try to get a hold of a book called "The Book of Questions" by Gregory Stock. The questions are difficult moral dilemmas that really make you think about what kind of person you are. This is a great book to take on a trip or to go thru with a group of friends, or just one special friend. I highly recommend it. (BTW this is not a religious book, though of course one's religious beliefs will affect how one would answer the questions.) There are no answers given to these questions, though some of them have follow-up questions.

If you don't know who you are by your qualities and how other people look up to you seeing your qualities you are either very young or are a little late at trying to figure out who you are.

One way is by getting to know others and realizing what you do or dont have in common with them.
You may not realize, for example, just how much you love music until you make a friend who talks you into taking up the bagpipes with her. Or the experience may open your eyes to the fact that you really think music is silly an overrated.

Find a good book on the basic temperament types. Amazon should be a good resource. All of us fall into one or a combination of four temperaments.
This is not the same as character. Character, for the most part is learned; temperament is hard wired into your DNA. I believe a study of the temperaments, and discerning yours, is the first step to self-awareness.

You have to look at other people and see their faults and then recognize your own. When you can see where your limitations are you can see where your qualities begin.

Don't ask Descartes - he wasn't too sure of is own existence.
Well, for real - you learn who you are by how you handle adversity.
