V-A-G-I-N-A - surely that isn't so hard to say, or perhaps [insert 'C' word here], depending on where you are talking about specifically given many people don't realise these are two different things. There is no shame at all in saying the word you know, it is no different from talking about your…what I can only describe as 'at end of arm' region, aka hand.

If you are looking at pain around the uterus area, roughly the sort of area that you would expect to have menstrual cramps then you could be looking at ovulation pains – of course what you determine as half way through your cycle and when you ovulate is anyone's guess. You mentioned period pains, so that may suggest you actually mean half way through your period rather than half way through your menstrual cycle, in that case it could very well be period pains, also as someone else suggested if this is the case and you use tampons then remove it, as it could be hitting your cervix.

Alternatively you could be looking at any number of things, STD's of course are one real possibility if you are sexually active, you could also be looking at more serious health problems such as cysts through to something as simple as gas pains. Without more information it is impossible to tell you, even if you did give us full information as to how far along your cycle is, whether or not you are ovulating, age and so on it would still just be a guess, if it carries on see a doctor.

If you are midway through your cycle, it could be "mittelschmerz", which is the German term for "pain in the middle". It is very common to have this pain at the middle of the cycle and it's caused by ovulation, usually not to worry about. You may take an antiinflamatory to get relief, like Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac (I don't know what you have in England).

However, reasons for abdominal pain in that region abound. I guess you are young, so the most likely causes are (I will mention in general, because I don't have much additional information from you):

- "Mittelschmerz"
- irritable bowel syndrome/constipation: associated with a previous history of similar pains, exacerbated by emotional stress, spicy foods. Some people have constipation predominant IBS and some have diarrhea-predominant IBS. Some peopla have alternate periods of diarrhea-constipation.
- Urinary tract infection: associated with lower abdominal pain and a burning sensation on urination. May have fever.
- Ectopic pregnancy: this is a DANGEROUS condition with pain in the lower abdomen, vaginal bleeding. Of course there must be a possibility of being pregnant. You must go to the ER immediately.
- Appendicitis: associated with loss of appetite, pain in the lower part of the abdomen (usually on the right), low grade fever.
- Diverticulitis: usually in constipated patients, also patients tend to be older, but can happen in young people. It's an inflammation of diverticuli, which are small pouches that form in the colon and get inflamed. Usually treated with antibiotics.

Hope it helps to make a decision.

It could just be period pain, I rarely get period pain but occasionally get pain in my back and 'gynaecological regions'. Perhaps have a hot bath or use a hot water bottle and go to bed. Take paracetamol if you feel you need to. If the pain does not ease then it might be something more serious, such as an etopic pregnancy, I also think such problems can be caused by the coyle. If you think it is something more serious go to your GP as soon as you can or accident and emergency and get it sorted. You should be able to tell yourself if it is cramp or a serious problem from the type and intensity of the pains.

If the pain is so bad and you cant knock it out with mild painkillers (parecetamol or at most, ibroprofen) and/or it comes again, please seek medical advice, in case something is wrong. Dont suppose you're using tampons are you? If so, take it out straightaway and use a towel instead! Hvae you moved your bowels? (sounds yucky, but this can help as I OFTEN have bad periods!) In the meantime, I can only suggest doing whatever you can to make you feel more relaxed (people know what works for them!). Perhaps watching tv, listening to music or reading, any activity whihc wont stimulate your mind too much but will help you take the mind off the pain. I can only send you my best wishes for a good nights sleep!

If it's not too bad I'd get to see your GP tomorrow, if it's so bad it's keeping you awake I would consider going to casualty.
