The FAO data reveals tomatoes are the most important vegetable produced in the world, with output inching upward 949,000 MT to almost 116 million MT in 2004.

It was followed by watermelons, with production rising over 1.4 million MT to 93.5 million in 2004.

Cabbages are the third most widely grown vegetable in the world, with output in 2004 rising roughly 1.5 million MT to almost 68.4 million MT.
Dry onion production rose over 600,000 MT to almost 53.6 million MT in 2004.
