Try a warm compress, usually relaxes the muscles- you can wrap it in a wet towel warmed in a microwave, or a bean bag warmed the same way.
These types of compresses will lose its heat fairly fast, so what I do for a heat compress that stays hot is boil a rock (about a pound in size) in hot water, then remove it(with tongs), and wrap it with a towel.
Massaging the joint also helps, Massage in long strokes, then slowly and manually bend the knee to the point of resistance. repeat until the resistance is less and less.

If you are awaiting arthroscopic knee surgery (and probably for a torn meniscus?) and have a history of the knee locking - don't try to release it yourself! There is nothing else you can do before seeing the doctor - if you really try to yank on the knee you will tear the meniscus even more or worse, like tearing the ACL.

Just keep icing it as the joint itself is probably swelling like crazy - keep the ice on for 10-15 minutes every hour you are awake. Take any pain meds or anti inflammatories and just try to wait it out.

Good luck!

You need to take the time to get it fixed, or you will permanently damage it.

Maybe some acupuncture.
