Craigslist is a good substitute for the local classifieds. You get a different kind of person posting there, kind of a hippie crowd a lot of the time. Check it out, it's free.

I have found Craigslist a great way to network, especially for community service, volunteer and special event opportunities. Its overall effectiveness depends on the specific communities...some communities, for example San Francisco, are more active than others. San Francisco was the first city, however, Craigslist has grown astronomically and really has a lot to offer.

Craig is Craig Newmark, the founder. He's a senior web-oriented software engineer (per his bio) with over 18 years experience at IBM and quite a bit of experience with other companies. Ironically, he's not the CEO for "Craigslist," and leaves that side to someone else. He's a strong advocate for social responsibility, and also has been involved in quite a few social groups in the San Francisco area. My understanding is he gives quite a bit to the community, and is pretty big on corporate ethics and responsibility. He does serve as the Chairman of Craigslist, while Jim Buckmaster is the CEO.

I definitely recommend craigslist and i have no idea who craig is but there are excellent deals on there. Stick within your own area. Pay when you pick up and don't mail any money to anyone and you will be fine.

Craig started the website. I think it started in San Fran, CA. I would recommend it, I've bought a lot of items from there and it's always worked well.

It depends on what you are using it for. I would not recommend it if your ad is likely to attract people who want to compete with you (e.g. selling a particular item) because the Administration does not review all the facts of situation when someone stages a personal attack against a specific user. However, if you are using it to find items, places or people, it can be helpful and worthwhile.

It was started by Craig Newmark in San Francisco and it's great. It's craigslist.org, not .com.
